01.17.06 - GREETINGS FROM THE ROCK BOAT VI
Putting the $24-per-hour-for-internet-at-sea to good use to say hey from the Carnival Elation Rockboat. Stay tuned for some video.

It's been a good time so far, though today we're expected to hit rough seas, forcing the ship to skip our intended port of Progresso, and making the prospect for land slim for some time. Arrgghh.

We're currently traveling at 16 knots, with the wind blowing at 25 knots and increasing up to 40 knots as the day goes on. The temperature is 77 deg, with the barometric pressure at 29.18 inches. Sunny, with increasing cloudiness.

The cruise has been very good.

However. Delta Airlines lost our luggage in Houston - along with all of our gear - forcing a 3-hour delay in the ships departure from Galveston on Saturday, to see if the 20 pieces would be arriving on another flight.

Carbon Leaf = Rocking the Boat.

They did not, and I have spent 3 days in the ship's HQ with no less than 6 Carnival crew persons assigned to the full-time task of facilitating Delta in doing their job of finding our luggage. The only thing I've learned so far is that Delta really sucks.

Fast Forward. Good news. Big shout out to my International Posse of Luggage Hunters: Andy Siderius, Marco, Nadia, Dora, Branislov, Slivka (sp?) and Bridget for finding our stuff. As far as i can tell, it was flown from Richmond to Atlanta, then it stayed in Atlanta when we missed our connecting flight to Houston because we had to change planes in richmond because of a faulty fuel filter. So it was eventually flown to Houston, then to Miami, where it might have changed Airlines to American or Continental or Mexican.... or stayed with Delta, no one really knows. From Miami it was flown to the island of Cozumel, where it was ferried to Cancun, where it was put on a truck and delivered to yesterday's port, Playa Del Carmen, in the nick of time before embarkation, just like the movies, orLove Boat.

They actually had to throw the last piece from the dock to me as the ship was pulling away and i had to just barely catch it, in slow motion.

However. The Gear was not so lucky, and sits in Cancun Customs with a big "No/Nunca/Nada/Nadia" stamped on it. It is awaiting it's fate, and today's goal for the IPLH and me is to get it on it's safe, and presumably Delta-complicated way back to Richmond, where it will hopefully be waiting for us when we arrive home on the 19th.

Anyway, in the meantime, we have bummed gear from Blue Merle, Gaelic Storm and Evenout in order to play our shows. Gracias fellas. On our first show night, the Rockboat organizers rented Tuxedos for us to play in, which worked well for the Prom Night Theme. thanks April, Tod and Sixthman!

It feels good for everyone to put on a new pair of clothes for the first time in 3 days since leaving Richmond. It's been nice to be able to see some of our friends play too.

And finally, I have some big news. I was given a Medal of Commendation from the Carnival Crew and made Honorary Purser.

I'm unclear on what my duties of Honorary Purser are, beyond being a pain in the ass to Carnival Crew members, who dutifully smile through it all, but upon my insistence that I not leave the ship without a title, HP it was.

The medal is VERY nice - it is a crimson and gold smoke stack with 'carnival' emblazoned across it in even more gold. It has a gold backing.

Today i'm going to go by the gift shop, though, as i suspect the same pin can be found there. If it is, i will consider putting in a request for my gold bar lapels.

See you ashore

Here's a little Christmas treat.

Texas Stars - 9:30 Club

12.23.05 - HOLIDAY QUIET ON THESE STREETS
Hello everyone, I'm writing from a quiet-as-a-mouse house here this evening at Carbon Leaf Headquarters in The Fan in Richmond. The guys and crew have all gone their separate ways and I'm battening down the hatches; filing away the last remnants of what was 2005, cleaning the December bunnies from the corner, sweeping out the old fireplace, and readying for the quiet midnight drive home for the Christmas Holidays.

I can't remember what time the ghosts of Christmas past, present, future are supposed to arrive down the dark end of my hallway, so I'm getting the hell out as soon as humanly possible. Because they're there.

But before I do, I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays...which/ever you prefer. Thanks for making 2005 our best year yet. Just as we lay Indian Summer down to rest here in December, no sooner does 2006 kick off preparations for a lot of new music, new directions, and re-visits to some of our favorite places, with hopefully some new ones in between.

To everyone who saw us and listened to us; worked for and volunteered for us - Thanks for providing us with life, love, loss and a landscape in which to dream.

And most importantly, if nothing else, I

Hold on....

I have to go, I hear a noise...

Here is a great article culled from the Minneapolis - Saint Paul City Pages, in which the author, in a state of blood-depleted delirium, ponders the venomous bite of "What About Everything".

Doug Feisty's Top 10 Songs of 2004

Scott's Best-Of 2004 Lists [rambling]

I'm sitting here brainstorming, realizing that I haven't seen, read or listened to more than 2 or 3 movies, books or CDs all yr. Of the ones I did see, read, hear, here are my favorites of 2004:

Movies:

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - quirky, engaging and beautifully shot. Particularly relevant if you've just been dumped.

"Master and Commander" - I have little faith in the big budget epics, but this was awesome, especially since I watched on a plane flight.

"School of Rock" - hilarious. Jack Black rules.

Books:

"Choke" (Chuck Palahniuk) - Dark, surreal and funny. Same author who wrote "Fight Club" I don't think this came out this year though!

"So You Wanna Be A Rock n' Roll Star" (Jacob Slichter) - written by the drummer of Semisonic, a firsthand account of the band's rise from obscurity and subsequent fall from massive popularity. He describes a lot of what CL has been going thru with regard to labels, radio, so it was especially pertinent. Plus he's a drummer. Rock.

"The Da Vinci Code" (Dan Brown) - I know everybody and their brother read this, but for someone who doesn't read a lot (say, me), I really loved this book.

Records:

(These didn't all come out this year, but I got really into them this year, so that counts, because I say so.)

My Morning Jacket - 'Acoustic Citsuoca - Live at the Startime Pavilion'
Death Cab for Cutie - 'Transatlanticism'
Calexico - 'Feast of Wire'
Erin Mckeown - 'Grand'
Fountains of Wayne - 'Welcome Interstate Managers'
Steve Burns - 'Songs for Dustmites' (thanks Caitlin!)
Mindy Smith - 'One Moment More'
The Postal Service - 'Give Up'

Miscellaneous:

Favorite Songs: "You Had Me" (Joss Stone), "Rains in Asia" (Jump)
Favorite Band Member: Me
Favorite Christmas Present: TBD
Favorite Manager: toss up between Erik Selz and Doug Feisty
Favorite CL Show: 'Indian Summer' Release Show at 9:30 Club (July)
Favorite Meals: Thai Food in Seattle, Fried Twinkie in Salina, KS
Favorite Wedding: Carter's
Favorite Bachelor Party: Carter's
Favorite Tourist Experience: Alcatraz in SF

Stephen Vanguard's Most Listened To Albums of 2004

... this doesn't necessarily mean best, just most LISTENED to, though one might surmise that listening to something the most is a subconscious evaluation in its own right. By the same token, some of these may very well have been simply better background music to get me through the work day. Now, don't take that to mean "passive" music, as my top "work listen" of the year was probably the oft ear-splitting agit-rock of Des_Ark, but I digress. Enjoy.

1] Jim White "Drill a Hole in that Substrate and Tell Me What You See" (v2)
2] Des_Ark "Days of Prole EP" (Self Released)
3] Vetiver "Vetiver" (Dicristina Stair Builders)
4] V/A "Golden Apples in the Sun" (Bastet)
5] Devendra Banhart "Rejoicing the Hands" (Young God)
6] Drive-By Truckers "Dirty South" (New West)
7] Camper Van Beethoven "New Roman Times" (Pitch-a-Tent/Vanguard)
8] Marah "20k Streets Under the Sky" (Yep Roc)
9] Sufjan Stevens "Seven Swans" (Sounds Familyre)
10] Mono "Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined"

11.18.04 - Much ado about much ...

This morning, Carbon Leaf taped a performance of "Life Less Ordinary" on the Dr Phil show. If you asked me - "Hey, where do you think Carbon Leaf will make their national TV debut for "Indian Summer?" - Dr Phil wouldn't have been on the tip of my tongue (primarily because they never host bands!) We'll announce the airdate for this segment as soon as we have it. Airdate for Dr Phil appearance is Tuesday, November 30!

The past few days were spent shooting the video for "Life Less ..." near Rosamond, California, in the desert, surrounded by Joshua trees, rocky knolls, and lots of dust. The location was that used in the Blazing Saddles campfire scene. Words cannot do justice to what an amazing experince this was. The band performed at sunset, sky aglow in red, orange and purple, snow-white owls circling overhead. We wrapped well into the evening, at which time the temperature hovered near 40˚. The Trio Films team, led by Elliott Lester, Annie Hanlon and Mary Church, are wonderful people - accommodating, creative and inspiring. We'll post some snaps from the shoot in the photos section ASAP. Snaps from video shoot now posted in "media" --> "photo gallery"

Lastly, look for the band to make another run around the 48 contiguous starting in mid-February, billed with Colorado's Big Head Todd & the Monsters. This tour will run for six weeks, and will hit all major US markets.

It's been a gratifying and thrilling few months for Carbon Leaf, for which we are all very thankful. Best wishes to you - our fans - over the coming holiday.

07.11.04 - A note from Barry ...

Hey everyone, the big week is finally here, when "Indian Summer" sees the light of day. The band has been touring very hard this year, has been to some great places and played for a lot of cool, new people across the country. We'll certainly be doing the same in support of the new cd, so learn the new songs and come on out to the shows ... exciting things ahead. Please rush out and buy "Indian Summer" this week and tell your friends to do the same. Call your local AAA stations and request that they add Carbon Leaf to their playlist. 'Life Less Ordinary' is the first single, and has been added to some great stations already, a good early sign.

Some of you have been wondering about the ENDLESS SUMMER LUAU V, and we're sorry that we'll be unable to host the event this year. There simply hasn't been enough time to put it together with the release being in July. With constant touring, having two big events in the Summer months would prove difficult. The priority this Summer needs to be the CD Release shows ... but hopefully, we'll be able to come back next year and pick up the tradition!

See everyone at the shows ...

barry

04.20.04 - Carbon Leaf signs to Vanguard Records
"Indian Summer" in stores nationwide July 13

We are pleased to announce that Carbon Leaf have signed a multi-album recording contract with Vanguard Records.

Part of the Welk Music Group, Vanguard was founded in the 1950s. Initially rooted in classical and jazz, with the success of Joan Baez in the 1960s, the company became the dominant label in the folk genre, releasing seminal live recordings from the Newport Folk Festival between 1959 and 1965.

In 1986, founders Seymour Solomon and his younger brother Maynard sold the label and it's rich catalog to the Welk Music Group [WMG]. The umbrella company for both Vanguard and Sugar Hill Records, recent WMG releases include albums from Nickel Creek, Mindy Smith, John Hiatt, Allison Moorer and Sam Bush.

02.01.03 - Official Taping Policy

Carbon Leaf encourages recording of our shows on any medium (DAT, MiniDisc, Analog Tape, Video Tape, etc.) Taping is permitted at shows for personal, non-commercial, home use only.

Carbon Leaf currently allows soundboard and audience microphone taping, but cannot guarantee a soundboard feed due to time and/or equipment restraints. We may also play venues where taping is not permitted. The venue has final authority re equipment permitted through the door.

Some rules to follow:

1] Show up with your tape deck at least 30 minutes before the show starts.

2] Be respectful of the band and venue crew and equipment. Do not plug in anything without asking!

3] The enjoyment of the audience in attendance always takes precedence over recording efforts. This means that at no time should tapers ever require patrons to be quiet or otherwise interfere with their enjoyment of the show.

4] Soundboard patches will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Be patient before a show - our crew can be very busy.

5] Bring all kinds of cables. Most board will have 1/4" outputs, some male XLR outputs. Bring whatever adapters you need to interface with your rig. We cannot provide cables or connectors.

6] Remember, the music from the soundboard is mixed to make the room, not your tapes, sound good.

Any questions? Please email Chris Buford (Monitor Engineer).
