» ROAD NOTES: Page Wilson Radio Show on NPR Page Wilson is somewhat of an icon when it comes to Richmond music. His show - Out of the Blue Radio Review - airs Saturday nights, 8 pm to 10 pm, on 88.9 WCVE, Richmond's national public radio station. It features what Page calls "pure bred American mongrel music." Which translates into, well, whatever he feels like playing. Lots of folk, bluegrass, rock n' roll. You get the point. So, we loaded in around 7 pm. Of course it was raining like mad. Page greeted us, gave us a quick tour, then showed us the goods - food from Souther Culture. The gumbo was to die for. Despite the week-long indigestion we all suffered afterwards, it was an amazing meal. While we stuffed our faces, Page gave us a quick run down of the show and how it was going to work. We played 2 sets, 3 songs in each set. I believe the first set was The Boxer, American Tale, and Attica; the second set was Desperation Song, Mary Mac, and Any Given Day. It was about as acoustic as it gets - 3 room mics, no amps, no drum kit. I played a cajon (a wooden box you sit on and play with your hands) and various percussion; Terry and Carter played acousic guitars; Jordan was on double bass; and of course Barry was kickin' it on the flute. To top it all off, I got to meet Dan Rosenthal (of NPR's morning addition fame) and Peter Solomon (NPR's jazz show) - two of my heros. What a night. This was a blast. Free beer, free food, and music. Can't beat it with a stick. From there, it was off to the studio to load in for the next day....... |
