In order to get a head start on our 13-hour drive, we left Richmond on Thursday night and drove up to Scott's parent's house, near Philadelphia. It is always nice to spend the night at one of our family's houses, because we all usually get a bed and get fed really well - plus, they generally don't kick us out a 11:00 am like the Econo Lodge. We then drove all day Friday and arrived in Burlington at 7:00 pm. The mountains and the foliage of Vermont are pretty awesome, so the last leg of the drive was a great relief from the congestion on I95 in New York and Connecticut. The Red Square is long, narrow and divided into 4 sections. The stage was probably one of the smallest that we have ever had to cram onto. The stage was set up in the back of section one of the club. It is about 3 steps up to the next section and it is divided by a handrail. Scott was forced to set up on the upper level of section two and the four of us were on the little stage in front of him. This was a little strange because A) Scott was detached so far from the rest of the band and B) People were hanging out behind Scott, often tapping him on the shoulder to say Hi. In the interest of saving space, I did not play electric guitar. Instead, I ran my acoustic through a distortion pedal (an idea we stole from Monty Montgomery, whom we played with in Atlanta last week…thanks!). It was not quite the same as my Gibson through my Marshall, but in a pinch it wasn't too bad. The crowd was great and very receptive. We met a lot of cool people and even some old friend's who had seen us a Whitlow's a few times. The bar was almost right on top of the stage, so it was very easy to keep the Guinness flowing all night. Carolyn did a great job of making it sound good and everyone seemed to have fun…can't wait to come back. Now we are back in the van heading to Portland, Maine. Barry is at the wheel and is listening to new songs on his Walkman, coming up with lyric ideas. Jordan thinks he has tonsillitis and everyone else is recovering from the breakfast we had at the aptly named Doughboy's. Ahhh, life on the road... -Terry
